It's already over, this edition of the KDB Cup. And what a one! On Saturday, the rain already put nothing in the way, but with Kevin's visit, a present sunshine ánd the last straight to the final, Sunday simply could not go wrong. We like to take a look back.
Thousands of supporters at post
It was headline counting on the second day of KDB Cup 2024. The rain stayed out and we got a fantastic continuation of a more than successful Saturday. We eventually clocked up nearly 12,000 supporters in attendance who came out loud to cheer our young heroes.
Add to this the hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers and we can speak of a memorable edition this year. Definitely a football festival for young and old. As chairman and founder Paul also testifies: "We look back on a successful football weekend with exciting matches and a fantastic atmosphere, both for the players and the visitors. That the boys get the chance to play against international teams here is unique."
Tough fight to the end
Sunday proved to be another great day of football. There was no sign of any lack of motivation among the teams competing in the Qualifiers and Play-Offs for places 5 to 12. Each of them gave their best again and again and fought until the very last second. All results can be found at Matches with the link to the VEO recording of each match.
Real dream final
So after Saturday, four teams remained to decide among themselves who would become the winner of the Kevin De Bruyne Cup 2024. In the semi-finals, Manchester City climbed to a 2-0 lead in the first half against Racing Genk and did not relinquish it. Gent, on the other hand, were able to shake off the Brazilians from Palmeiras 0-1.
So we got a dream final this edition, with Kevin De Bruyne's current employer taking on his first ever elite team. In a sweltering and sun-drenched final, Manchester City made up the difference shortly after half-time, 2-1. For the first time, they got to put the trophy in the air and received it, nota bene, from the hands of Kevin himself!
Standouts in the spotlight
Midfielder Gianluca Okon, son of former Golden Shoe Paul Okon, was voted best player of the tournament. The number 6 of Club Brugge filled his central role perfectly. Lucas Alvadaro of Manchester City was the best goalkeeper. Top marksman was Floyd Samba of Manchester City, with 4 goals in 4 matches. Manchester United won the Fairplay Prize and received this trophy from Bob Browaeys, director of Sport at Voetbal Vlaanderen.
